Medial Epicanthoplasty

At the junction of upper and lower eyelids, the outer corner of the eye is called the lateral canthus, the inner corner of the eye is called medial canthus. Asians’ excessive skin folds over medical canthus is called medial epicanthus, which is also called "Mongolian folds." Too many epicanthic folds will cover the inner white of the eye, making the eye shape shorter and the distance of two eyes wider. If the symptoms get severe, eyes look crossed, and it is also possible to have trichiasis over the inner side of the eye.(Image 1)

The purpose of medial epicanthoplaty is to reduce the excessive epicanthic folds and open the obscured inner white of the eye, and it also can lengthen the eyes. If combined with double eyelid surgery, the eyes can be larger. However, if the medial canthus is opened too much, or Mongolian folds are originally not obvious with the medial canthus opened too much, it will result in overexposed lacrimal caruncle (the flesh-colored part between the inner white of the eye and the corner of the eye), which will change the appearance of the eyes. If there is less outer white of the eye but more inner white of the eye, there will be external oblique eyes, so-called exotropia, which is not pretty.(Image 2) Besides, it’s likely to have dry eye syndrome. Therefore, it is necessary to simulate the degree of change before the surgery, and discuss it clearly before surgery , so as to avoid unnatural eyes. A proper eye distance is important to form a balance face.
